IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO ACTUATING MECHANISMS FOR NUCLEAR REACTOR CONTROL RODS AND THE LIKE

An actuating mechanism of the chain-drum type is designed for reactor control rods. The mechanism comprises a driven pulley wheel located in a reactor standpipe, and a chain passing over the wheel so that rotation of the wheel causes one end of the cain to be raised and the other end to be lowered into the reactor. A control rod is suspended from one end of the chain. When the control rod is withdrawn from the reactor, the radioactivity of the raised chain is not cumulative as would be the case if the chain was wound in turns around the wheel. (D.L.C.)
