IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO NUCLEAR REACTOR CONTROL ROD WINDING MECHANISMS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4695199

A control rod winding mechanism is designed for gascooled graphite- moderated reactors. The mechanism comprises a winding drum journalled in a supporting structure for winding a cable on to and off a spirally grooved outer surface of the drum, means for causing the drum to move along its axis of rotation so that the cable pay-off position is kept stationary, and pulley means for guiding the cable on to and off the drum. The driving means comprises a constant-speed motor coupled to the drum through a variable ratio gear unit. The gear ratio is varied to produce a constant rate of reactivity change as the drum moves axially. (D.L.C.)
