EFFECT OF X RAYS ON THE ACCUMULATION OF CATALASE IN CONIDIA OF ASPERGILLUS NIGER
Investigations were made on the effect of x radiation of low dose rate on the accumulation of catalase in conidia of Aspergillus niger. The activity of catalase was determined by measuring the oxygen evolved from hydrogen peroxide in a conventional Warburg manometric apparatus at 30 deg C. X irradiation for 20 min (corresponding to about 5400 rads) increased the catalase activity to a maximum. At this point the activity was found to be 112 mu l O/sub 2/mg conidia. It was concluded that x radiation, when applied at low dose rate, is feasible for the increase of catalase activity of conidia of Aspergillus niger. whereas ultraviolet light consisting chiefly of wave-length 360 m mu , is responsible for the inactivation of the enzyme, (P.C.H.)
