INVESTIGATION OF THE RADIATION SENSITIVITY OF CATALASE (in German)

Journal Article · · Strahlentherapie (West Germany)
OSTI ID:4779043

The radiation sensitivity of catalase was found to depend upon the oxygen content of the irradiated enzyme solution and the dose rate of the radiation used. This different radiation sensitivity is caused by the hydrogen peroxide, which is produced in different amounts depending upon the oxygen content and the dose rate. The protection effect of hydrogen peroxide on the radiation induced inactivation of the catalase is caused by the formation of reversible catalase-hydrogen peroxide-complexes. It is assumed that the biological effect of the ionizing radiation is influenced by catalase, which destroys by formation of the catalase-hydrogen peroxide-complex the OH- and H0/ sub 2/-radicals.
