ASSIGNMENTS OF THE $sup 35$Cl NUCLEAR QUADRUPOLE RESONANCE SPECTRA IN MULTICHLOROBENZENES BY THE MEASUREMENT OF THE ZEEMAN EFFECT

Assignments of the Cl/sup 35/ nuclear quadrupole resonance spectra were made for some polychlorobenzenes by Zeeman studies of single crystals. Three resonance lines in 1,3, 5-trichlorobenzene were assigned, in the order of increasing frequency, to Cl/sub 3/, Cl/sub 1/, and Cl/sub 5/; 2 lower frequencies in 1,2,3, 4-tetrachiorobenzene to Cl/sub 1/ and Cl/sub 4/ and 2 higher ones to Cl/ sub 2/ and Cl/sub 3/; and in pentachiorobenzene, the second highest frequency to the chlorine atom at the para position with respect to the single hydrogen atom. Shifts of the resonance frequencies were accounted for in terms of the induction effect. It is likely that the ortho effect is produced by the direct field arising from the charges on the neighboring atoms rather than the indirect one propagated through the chemical bonds. The interpretation of the 3 frequencies in 1,3,5trichlorobenzene was also attempted from the viewpoint of the intermolecular effect. It was suggested that an induction effect independent of the directions takes place in the crystal among the neighboring molecules. (P.C.H.)
