RESEARCH APPLICATIONS OF KRYPTON-85. Quarterly Progress Report, October 1- December 31, 1962

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4736047
Investigation of the polymerization of acetylene at high pressure, induced by BETA -radiation from Kr/sup 85/ was continued. Some physical and chemical properties of the polymer were studied. It was concluded that the polymer does not react rapidly with air but the possibility of a slow reaction is suggested. Microscopic examination showed the material to be in the form of porous clumps with glassy surfaces. Examination of the polymer with the electron microscope showed that it was in the form of sheets but did not reveal any regular structure. The feasibility of forming polymer films on metal and glass surfaces using Kr/sup 85/ radiation to cause polymerization was demonstrated. Further investigation of this technique is planned. (auth)
