FISSION FRAGMENT ENERGY DEPOSITION EFFICIENCY

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4734909
The calculation of the efficiency of deposition of kinetic energy of the recoiling fission fragments is discussed, and equations are given for the range of fission fragments in various substances. The overall energy deposition efficiency epsilon /sub 0/ for any combination of fuel and chemical system is given by epsilon /sub 0/ = epsilon /sub KE/ epsilon /SG/ epsilon /sub EG/, where epsilon /sub KE/ = frac tion of total fission energy as kinetic energy (0.84 for fission fuels), epsilon /sub SG/ = self-absorption efficiency or fraction of energy escaping the parent fuel particle, and epsilon /sub EG/ = non- re-entry efficiency. Efficiency vs fuel dimension curves are given for the epsilon /sub SG/ in spherical, cylindrical, and slab geometries of solid U/sub 3/ O/sub 8/; epsilon /sub SG/ epsilon /sub EG/ for an ordered array of infini te slabs; epsilon /sub 0/ of various U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ geometries in rir at 80 atm and 482 deg C; epsilon /sub SG/ epsilon /sub EG/ for U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ spheres in gases with various fissio n fragment ranges; and epsilon /sub SG/ epsilon /sub EG/ for UO/sub 2/ slurry in water.
