Relations for determining from fission-fragment range data the fraction of total fission energy deposited (efficiency) when the kinetic energy of fission fragments is used to promote chemical reactions or to produce electricity (direct conversion) are examined. Fission fragment ranges in various materials are given, and the efficiencies of uranium oxide spheres in air, gas, and water are shown. (D.C.W.)
