OPTICAL AND MICROWAVE INVESTIGATIONS OF SOLIDS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4734588
Infrared equipment was improved. The optical design calculation for the Raman spectrophotometer was completed. Measuremerts of the I-V curves of a number of thin film superconductor -metal oxide-superconductor tunnel junctions reveaied deviations from the usual single particle tunneling curves in the form of excess currents. Investigations of Azbel-Kaner type cyclotron resonance in p- type PbTe yielded detailed information about the valence band structure of PbTe. A theoretical analysis was made of Azbel-Kaner cyclotron resonance in semiconductors in which the cyclotron orbit of the carriers was not large compared to the skin depth. Studies were made of the magnetoresistance of nickel and its interpretation in terms of the structure of the Fermi surface. Well- resolved AzbelKaner cyclotron resonance was observed in gold. The valence band structure of Bi/sub 2/Te/sub 3/ was investigated by means of de Haas-van Alphen oscillations. (M. C.G.)
