Azbel' and Kaner have suggested that the microwave surface impedance of a metal at low temperatures should show periodic variations with magnetic field, if the field is applied parallel to the surface. Preliminary observations are reported on this effect in Bi crystals of three different orientations, and the results are shown to agree reasonably well with those expected on the basis of Shoenberg's measurements of the De Haas --Van Alphen effect. A model is proposed for the Fermi surface in Bi which appears to be consistent with most of the available experimental evidence on this metal.
