Investigations were undertaken to clarify the mechanism of the S sensitization of photographic emuisions. Sodium thiosuifate with exterior S atoms labeled with S/sup 35/ was used for the sensitization. An ammonium aged highly halated emulsion and a non-ammonium aged non-halated emulsion were used. After exposure the emulsions were treated in various ways. The results are shown graphically and indicate that at optimum sensitization only very little silver sulfide is formed. With too much over-aging or sensitization of the emulsion at low p/sub Ag/ more silver sulfide is formed. No siiver suifide can be detected with too short an aging period. Almost no thiosulfate is removed by prolonged washing. Both unaltered thiosuifate and silver sulfide apparently work as bromate acceptors. The formation of direct black grains was explained by the adsorption of thiosulfate on metallic silver and its transformation to silver suifide. (J.S.R.)
