Some characteristics of the synthesis, photographic processing, and the physical-mechanical and registration properties of nuclear emulsions with complete substitution of the gelatin by polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and its derivative the polyvinyl acetate of 2,4disulfobenzaldehyde are reported. A sharp dependence of the colloidal stability of the emulsion on the viscosity of the PVA during emulsification and on the physical aging regime was observed. The effect obtained is explained on the basis of the concept of the concurrent adsorption of PVA, polyvinylacetate, and KBr on the surface of silver halogenides. It was shown that the use of iodobromo silver emulsions is inadvisable because the iodide, not improving the granulometric properties, causes a strong hazing of the photographic layers. The characteristics of the sensitization of the emulsion with Au consists in the strong superadditivity of the effects of Au and thiosulfate and also in the impossibility of introducing the latter only after some preliminary aging. The characteristics of the development of the emulsion in different developers are reported. The best results were obtained with the use of amidol developer. Emulsions before su sensitization register fission fragments from heawy nuclei but do not register alpha particles. After Au sensitization the emulsions register alpha particles, protons at energies up to 80 MeV, and electrons up to 40 keV. The optimum procedure for the elimination of the charged particle background accumulated by the photographic layers during storage was examined and the areas for the use of the emulsion are indicated.
