THE NEW HANFORD FILM BADGE DOSIMETER
A common problem in personnel dosimetry is the measurement of radiation dose with personnel dosimeters when several types and energies of radiation may be present concurrently. The new Hanford film badge dosimeter was designed to solve this problem to the best extent possible within the available film dosimetry technology. This dosimeter utilizes the latest advances in film filter systems for routine dose evaluations and provides high neutron dose and high gamma dose evaluation capabilities following a serious radiation event. The new Hanford personnel film badge dosimeter was placed into routine service at Hanford on August 10, 1962. The dosimeter measures 8 cm x 4.5 cm x 0.9 cm and weighs 34 grams. It is molded from Cycolac'' plastic (Styrene -butadiene- acrylonitrile). The dosimeter provides for the evaluation of radiation dose from beta, gamma and x-ray radiations present independently or concurrently. Activation foils provide neutron dosimetry in the event of a criticality or similar radiation event. Two small silver phosphate glass rod dosimeters (fluorods) are included to provide measurement of high gamma dose. Indium foil is provided for prompt sorting of directly-involved personnel following a criticality event. The dosimeter was designed to take full advantage of mechanized processing. Each dosimeter contains a lead tape perforated with the employee's payroll number. A binaiy number code is used for the payroll number to facilitate machine reading. Prior to the removal of the film packet, the payroll number is x-rayed onto a part of the film to provide positive and permanent identification. Film identification and film exchange are performed mechanically by a film dosimeter processing machine. The film slide is held in the dosimeter by a T'' lock which is released magnetically for film exchange. The dosimeter is designed to be relatively tamper-proof'' and it cannot be easily opened without a special magnet. The dosimeter design provides for use of the Hanford security credential in a neat integrated assembly. The security credential is removable from the dosimeter and can be readily removed by the wearer for dosimeter exchange. (auth)
