THE TELLURIDES L$sub 3$Te$sub 4$ AND L$sub 2$Te$sub 3$ OF THE RARE EARTH ELEMENTS HAVING THE THORIUM PHOSPHIDE Th$sub 3$$P$$sub 4$ CRYSTALLINE TYPE (in French)
The first five elements of the rare earth series (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm) from tellurides with the formula LTe/sub 1.38/ that have the thorium phosphide Th/sub 3/P/sub 4/ structure. Gd, Dy, and Y do not form definite compounds of this type. Cerium appears in the compound as a trivalent ion. In Sm/sub 3/Te/sub 4/, there are two trivalent and one divalent Sm ions. La, Pr, and Nd tellurides behave differently from Ce/sub 3/Te/sub 4/. For La, Ce, and Pr, there are phases of the Th/sub 3/P/sub 4/ type for the composition LTe/sub 1.5/. Nd/sub 2/Te/sub 3/ and Gd/sub 2/Te/sub 3/ have a cryst alline structure different from that of Th/sub 3/P/sub 4/, but has not been identified. The simultaneous existence of Sm/sup 2+/ and Sm/sup 3+/ causes a linear variation of the crystalline parameters as a function of the composition in the entire solid solution region. (J.S.R.)
