In radiation measuring techniques the limits of measurement of a counting system must frequently be determined. These depend upon numerous parameters. The conceptions of discrimination limits and of detection limits are explained in terms of error theory, and their dependence on the magnitudes of various factors is set out. The size of these factors is determined by the properties of the detector, of the ambient radiation field, of the radiation to be measured, and of the chosen method of working. Relations may be discovered by the application of extremal calculations that optimize either the detection limits or the total measuring time, the other quantity being regarded as fixed. The measuring limits are turned into units of activity and dose in order that they may be applied for radiation protection measurements. The detection limit is not a characteristic of a radiation detector or of a counting arrargement. It is therefore better in place of a detection limit to quote the various parameters in so far as they themselves relate to the detector. (auth)
