RADIOACTIVITY SPECTROMETRY IN SAMPLE ANALYSIS
Patent

OSTI ID:4118604
A spectrometry method and apparatus for simultaneously and independently detecting and counting the radioactivity from 2 or more isotopes are patented. The isotopes may be present in composite or separate sources. The apparatus contains a radiation detector to convert the energy from the radioactive decay of the isotopes into electrical pulses proportional in amplitude to the energy emitted by the decay events. The pulses are fed into a plurality of channels, and the pulses in each channel are amplified by different gain factors and then discriminated. Only selected implitude bands of pulses are passed. Amplitude bands are selected so that pulses passed by different channels correspond primarily to decay events from different isotopes. The rate of occurrence of the discriminated pulses are separately determined for each channel. A variety of detectors may be used with the apparatus, making it possible to measure a wide range of double-label or mixed samples. (M.P.G.)
