THE PHOTOPRODUCTION OF PION PAIRS FROM HYDROGEN

The reactions gamma + p yields p + pi /sup +/ + pi /sup -/ gamma + p yields n + pi/sup +/ + pi /sup 0/, and gamma + p yields p + pi /sup 0/ + pi /sup 0/ were studied for photon energies from 800 to 1200 Mev. The photons were obtained in the form of bremsstrahlung from an electron synchrotron. For each reaction, both of the pions were detected in telescopes that were piaced at angles of 50, 70, and 90 deg on opposite sides of the photon beam, The charged pion telescopes consisted of two scintillation counters and a lucite Cerenkov counter. The neutral pion telescopes contained a total absorption iead giass Cerenkov counter to detect the photons into which neutral pions decay. Because double pion photoproduction is a three body reaction, specifying the pion angles and the incidert photon energy is not sufficient to determine the kinematics; therefore integrations were made over all the kinematical possibilities. The principal result is that neutral pion cross sections are proportional to phase space, but charged pion cross sections tend to peak in the forward direction. A possible theoretical explanation of this effect is discussed. A summary of recent experimental work on the forces between pions is also given. (Dissertation Abst., 23: No. 5, Nov. 1952)
