DOUBLE PION PHOTOPRODUCTION

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Letters
The possible reactions for the photoproduction of two pions from hydrogen are (1) gamma + p yields p + pi /sup 0/ + pi /sup 0/, (2) gamma + p yields p + pi /sup +/ + pi /sup -/, and (3) gamma + p yields n + pi /sup +/ + pi /sup 0/. T hese reaCtions are of interest for the study of the isobar model, pi -nucleon forces, and pi - pi forces. The Cornell synchrotron bremsstrahlung beam was used to observe (1) and (3) by detecting the two pi 's in coincidence. A photon from the decay of a pi /sup 0/ enters the totally absorbing lead glass Chererkov counter, producing a pulse proportional to its energy. A diagram is given of the experimental arrangement showing the incident gamma -ray beam and the Chererkov counter. The results are given in graphical and tabular form. Reaction (1) seems to be isotropic while reaction (3) shows a strong forward peaking of pi /sup +/, particularly for forward pi /sup 0/ angles. (B.O.G.)
