Comparison of Iodine 124 and Iodine 131 for Thyroid Ablation

Three patients were given therapeutic doses of I124 to ablate residual normal thyroid tissue following surgical removal of one lobe. The amount of I124 (in millicuries) required for ablation was found to be about equal to (0.7 to 1.5 times) the amount that gives the same mean calculated dose in rads to the gland as the amount of I131 required for ablation. The significance of this is discussed in relation to the gain factor of the more uniform radiation from I124 compared with I131. In thyroid carcinoma where there are larger regions of low uptake, the gain factor may be much greater.
