Serotonin and the Local Effect of X Rays. 4. Protection Effect of Substances Related to Serotonin Against X Rays (in French)
Eleven substances related to serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) were tested in guinea pig skin for protection against the epilating action of local 800-r doses of 50-kv x irradiation. The substances were injected intraperitoneally in 15-mg doses and their protective effects compared with those of serotonin. Some protection was afforded by 5-hydroxytryptophan and tryptophan but to a less extent than serotonin. No anti-epilatory action was noted with the following: indole, 5-hydroxyindole, 5hydroxyindoleacetamide, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, indoleacetic acid, tryptamine, psilocine (N,N-dimethyl-4hydroxytryptamine), and psilocybine (the phosphate derivative of the preceding compound). The only compound tested that showed protection equal to that of serotonin was bufotenine (N,N-dimethyl-5-hydroxytryptamine). The results indicate that the protective action of serotonin is dependent upon both the phenolic hydroxyl group in position 5 and the primary amine, although dimethylation of the amine group does not impair activity. The radioprotective activity of some of these substances may depend upon their partial in vivo transformation to serotonin. (TCO)
