YIELDS OF Fe$sup 2+$ ION OXIDATION IN H$sub 2$O ICE IRRADIATED WITH Co$sup 60$ $gamma$ RAYS

Ice containing Fe/sup 2+/ was irradiated at -196, -78, and -20 un. Concent 85% C with gamma radiation at a dose rate of 4.8 x 10/sup 18/ ev/ml/hr. After irradiation the samples were melted and the concentration of Fe/sup 3+/ ions determined by spectrophotometric examination. The G(Fe/sup 3+/) values in ice varied from 0.4 to 0.8 at-196, from 1.2 to 2.0 at-78 un. Concent 85% , and from 1.3 to 4.1 at-20 un. Concent 85% . The measurements were reproducible and showed a marked dependence of G(Fe/sup 3+/) on both pH and Fe/sup 2+/ ion concentration. Some irradiations were carried out with pure ice; the samples of the latter, treated as a source of free radicals, were dissolved after irradiation in Fe/sup 2+/ ion solution and the concentration of Fe/sup 3+/ ions produced by the method was determined.
