THE BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF HEAVY COSMIC RAY PARTICLES

A very narrow beam of 22-Mev deuterons was developed which wwillproduce the same effect in biological matarial as a track from a heavy primary cosmic ray particle. Using this microbeam on mice, it was concluded that these cosmic particles will have the following biological effects on man: There will be no effect in the brain since this tissue is very insensitive to this radiation; minute opacities may form in the lens of the eye but these will not progress to form a cataract; dark hair will turn gray;/ and other organs will probably be unaffected.
