THE POSSIBILITIES OF USING SOLID-STATE SILICON DETECTORS IN NUCLEAR STUDIES (in Russian)
The properties of various kinds of solid-state silicon developed at the Institute of Technical Physics in Leningrad are discussed, and data on the resolution and electronic circuits are given. Detectors made from n-type silicon with a specific resistance of 100 to 200 ohm-cm have working areas of 4, 25, and 50 mm/sup 2/. The applied potential is 200 times the contact potential (V = 200 v), and the width of the sensitive volume layer d = 100 . The resolution for the 4.816-Mev alpha particles of U/sup 233/ is better than 0.5% ( st run. Concent 25 kev). A large surface-barrier detector with a sensitive area of 5 cm/ sup 2/ shows a resolution of only 7% or 350 kev for 5-Mev alpha particles at a signal to noise ratio of 10. These detectors can still be used to count fission fragments, where the signal to noise ratio is st run. Concent 100, and a resolution of 7% is frequently satisfactory. With the use of a diffusion-drift technique of introducing lithium into ptype silicon, a counter having a sensitive area of 4 cm/sup 2/ and a width of st run. Concent 2 mm was developed that could count 5-Mev alpha particles at a signal to noise ratio of 50. Circuits of a preamplifier and a transistorized amplifier are presented for use with solid- state counters. (TTT)
