In a first embodiment the fuel element casing comprises a cylindrical body with sets of portlons of helical parallel fins having substartially a longitudinal direction. Narrow longitudinal as well as transverse passages without fins are provided between adjacent sets, the direction of the helices in each set being opposite to that in each adjacent set. In a second embodiment the sets form circumferential bands separated by transverse passages, the direction of the helices in each band being opposite to that in the adjacent bands. (NPO)
