CORTISONE AND RADIATION. PART IV

Journal Article · · Strahlentherapie (West Germany)
OSTI ID:4724904
A study was undertaken to ascertain the simultaneous effect of cortisone and radiation in rat submaxillary gland. From the earlier reports in mice and the investigation in rats, it is concluded that: there is a striking similarity between submaxillary gland and kidney, both in normal (sexual dimorphism) and in irradiated arimals (masculinization); the functional activity of submaxillary gland and kidney is highly disturbed by hormonal imbalance (gonadal disturbances and ovarian atrophy) created by radiation and reinforced by cortisone; these organs are under the influence of endocrine glands; and cortisone reinforces the injurious effects of radiation, resulting in a premature response. Physiological activity, histologic structure, and its variations, and the inter-relationship of submaxillary gland and kidney with the endocrine glands are discussed. (auth)
