INFLUENCE OF GAS ADMIXTURES ON THE SENSITIVE TIME OF SPARK CHAMBERS

Journal Article · · Nucl. Instr. Methods
Some electronegative gases have an attachment probability for electrons, which is sensitive to the electron energy. In order to investigate the influence of this attachment process when the electronegative gas is present as an impurity, a three-plate spark chamber was constructed with stainless steel plates. Efficiency measurements were made in a pure Ar atmosphere and in different Ar--O/ sub 2/ mixtures. It was found that the efficiency is strongly dependent on the partial pressure of O/sub 2/ and on the magnitude of the clearing field. Figures show the attachment probability as a function of electron energy for O/sub 2/ and the efficiency of the spark chamber as a function of clearing fleld and delay time. Contamination of Ar with N/sub 2/ was also found to enhance the electron drift velocity appreciably. (A.G.W.)
