EFFECT OF IONIZING RADIATION ON AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS OF VITAMIN B$sub 1$$sub 2$ (in German)

The decomposition of Co/sup 58/-labeled vitamin B/sub 12/ as a result of self irradiation was investigated and the dose output of the aqueous solution was calculated. At a radioactive concentration of 3.0 mC/21 ml the absorbed doses were D/sub gamma / = 8050, D/sub BETA +/ = 3310, and D/sub K/ = 900 rad/D, altogether 10,260 rad/D. The total dose corresponding to a half-value time is 533,000 rad. The decomposition was followed by paper chromatography, electrophoresis, and bacteriology. Solutions of labeled and unlabeled vitamin B/ sub 12/ exposed to external Co/sup 60/ radiation were also used in the investigations. The relation between the modification of the absorption spectra, the decrease of the biological efficiency, and the increase of the radioactive impurities with absorbed dose was derived. Various substances were tested for the protection of aqueous labeled vitamin B/sub 12/ solutions. Of these ethanol was especially suitable. (tr-auth)
