In mice irradiated with 50, 250, 450, or 650 r 24 hr prior to a single infection with 200 T. spiralis larvae, no interference in the development of acquired immunity was noted 14 days postinfection. However, interference with the maintenance of immunity was noted at 20 and 28 days in those exposed to 450 ana 650 r. In general, mice showing a normal immune response showed a pattern of weight loss and later gain associated with the stress of intestinal inflammation, When similar doses of irradiation were given to previously immunized mice 24 hr prior to a challenge infection, there was no interference with the maintenance of acquired immunity by 7 days postchallenge. However, after high doses (450 and 650 r), interference with immunity was evidert at 14 days. Recovery of immunity was evident within an additional 2 weeks. Interference with acquired immunity was demonstrated in immunized mice at 7-day necropsy when the schedule of irradiation (450 r) was altered so that the 7-day necropsy was equivalent to the 14-day period in the previous experiment. It is suggested that radiation interferes with 1 or more phases of the intestinal inflammatory response. Irradiation effect on acquired immunity appears to be an indirect one brought about by damage to the hematopoietic system, which is thereby unable to supply the large numbers of cellular elements needed to initiate and maintain an effective inflammatory response.
