Rare earth fluorides were prepared by thermal decomposition of binary ammonium salts at 600 un. Concent 85% and heated in a vacuum up to 1300 un. Concent 85% . The low-temperature specimens are isotropic or pseudoisotropic; the high-temperature ones are anisotropic. The infrared spectra of these fluorides were studied at 2 to 25 . In the case of fluoride hydrates exhibiting water absorption bands, there is a shifting and widening because of hydrogen bonds, and there is also an intensification in the 400 to 500 cm/sup -1/ region. The latter band is also present for dry fluorides and is attributed to M- F valence bond vibration. Thermal treatment does not shift the bands but lowers their intensity, which explains the decrease in the number of structural defects with annealing. (tr-auth)
