PORTABLE DOP TESTER FOR INSPECTION OF HIGH-EFFICIENCY FILTERS

Journal Article · · American Industrial Hygiene Association Journal (U.S.) Formerly Am. Ind. Hyg. Assoc. Q.
Description is given of a portable filter tester consisting of a di- octyl phthalate (DOP) aerosol generator and lightscattering photometer, which is used to detect damage or imperfections in high-efficiency filters. Testing consisted of introducing the DOP aerosol at the upstream side of the filter while sampling downstream for penetration of DOP through the filter using the photometer. The tester is used routinely to inspect new filters prior to issue. A system of scanning probes is described for use with cartridge filters. They permit sampling close to the point of DOP penetration before dilution of the aerosol with filtered air and resuit in a much more sensitive method for detection of holes in the filter. When the probes are used in the manner described, a single hole 1/16 in. in diameter is clearly detectable, whereas this size hoie usually cannot be seen using a centerline probe sampling at a point where the penetrating DOP is well mixed with the air flow.
