Standard method for evaluation of air assay media by the monodisperse DOP (dioctyl phthalate) smoke test

Journal Article · · Annu. Book ASTM Stand.; (United States)
OSTI ID:7356862
The dioctyl phthalate (DOP) smoke test, typical equipment, calibration procedures, and test practices are described for measuring the fine-particle arresting efficiency of an air or gas cleaning system or device. A monodispersed aerosol of 0.3 ..mu..m diameter is continuously generated by condensation of DOP vapor under controlled conditions. A metered portion of this aerosol is drawn through a specimen mount containing the item under test. Flow rate resistance through the specimen is noted. With aerosol generation stabilized, aerosol concentration is measured upstream and downstream of the specimen under test by use of a linear forward light-scattering photometer. The results are expressed as percent of DOP penetration at the flow rate used. The method is applicable to the evaluation of efficiency of depth filters, membrane filters, and other particle collecting-devices. (BLM)
