A fuel failure occurring on Dec. 19, 1961, exposed uranium to water coolant in the E-20 loop. A decontamination procedure utilizing alkaline permanganate and oxalic- sulfuric acid solutions was used, taking care to prevent the permanganate from contacting the Stellite and Graphitar pump bearings. The average radiation level of the piping was reduced from 250 to 20 mr/hr by this procedure. The decontaminating solutions were analyzed for the radionuclides and the results are given. (D.L.C.)
