The alkaline permanganate solution used in the process of U. S. Patent 3,080,262 to decontaminate internal surfaces in a nuclear power plant, is corrosive to cobalt alloys, particularly Stellite 6 and Stellite 12. The permanganate solution may be made noncorrosive to cobalt alloys by the addition of a soluble chromate. Several examples of such noncorrosive permanganate solutions and their use are given.
