EFFECT OF RADIATION RATE ON THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

The effects of long-term irradiation at a low rate on the central nervous system was compared, in tests with rabbits, to the effects of a single large dose on the protective flection reflex, and in rats on the electric resistance of the cerebral cortex and conditioned reflex activity. Rabbits were exposed to x rays either in single whole-body doses of 400 v or in split doses of 10 r five times per week for eight weeks. No appreciable difference was observed in the effect of the two types of exposure on the latent period of the unconditioned protective flection reflex of the shank. Two groups of rats were exposed to gamma radiation in whole-body doses of 160 r. One group was subjected to chronic (22 hr/day), low doses ( st run. Concent 6 r per diem) until the total of 160 r was reached; the second group received a single 160 r exposure (at 84 r/min). Changes induced in the central nervous system, as reflected by conditioned reflex activity, were approximately the same. Two groups of rats were exposed to doses of 600 r, the first at the rate of 0.5 r/min and the second at 600.0 r/min. Changes in the electric resistance of the cerebral cortex in the slowly irradiated group were far more marked and lasted four to five days longer than changes in the second group. It was concluded that prolonged irradiation at a low dosage rate has a more profound effect on the functioning of the central nervous system than an equal dose administered at a high rate. (TCO)
