RADIOACTIVE DETERMINATION OF URANIUM IN FOUR-COMPONENT SAMPLES
The sensitivity of the BETA - gamma method for the determination of U in ores in the presence of different amounts of Ra, Th, and K was improved by the introduction of an additional measurement of BETA -radiation passing through on a 0 5-mm Al screen. A 10-mm thick layer of the powdered sample, weighing 80 to 120 g, is placed in a cylindrical container 30 mm in dia and 100 mm high, and the radioactivity is measured with a counting tube. The U content (in 10/sup -4/%) is X = 1.71 I/sub 2/- (1.603 + 2.41 P/sub 0//P/sub x/)I/sub 3/ - 0.302I/sub 2/ + 2.41(P/sub 0//P/sub x/)I/sub f/, where I/sub 1/, I/sub 2/, and I/sub 3/ are counting rates, obtained during measurement with the counting tube screened by paper, 0.5 mm Al, or 2 mm brass screen, respectively. I/sub f/ is the background counting rate; P/sub x/ and P/sub 0/ are weights of the sample and of the standard of specific gravity 1.25. The sensitivity of the method is 0.001 to 0.0015%. The error at the sensitivity threshold is 450 deg C in a 4 to 5 x 10/ sup -4/%. (Referativnyy Zhurnal, Khimiya, No. 5, 1962).
