CHLORINATION OF SILICON-CONTAINING MONOMERS AND POLYMERS UNDER THE EFFECT OF GAMMA-RADIATION
Polydimethylsiloxane rubber (I) and polyphenylmethylsiloxane (II) as well as a number of monomers were chlorinated at 0 deg C under the action of gamma -radiation (Co/sup 60/ with an activity of 1400 g-equiv of Ra). Chlorination of I took plac easily and rapidly until the introduction of an average of two C1 atoms into the chain of the polymer, after which the process rate fell sharply. In a metal autoclave at both 0 and 60 deg C, destruction of the polymer took place. With chlorination of II (molar ratio of Cl: siloxane = 2: 1 and 3: 1) substitution and addition chlorination took place in the aromatic ring. With chlorination of (CH/sub 3/)/sub 3/ClSi (molar ratio of Cl/sub 2/ : silane = 0.51: 1) the basic product was a monochlorine derivative; chiorination of 18.6 g of ethyl-tricitlorosilane (molar ratio of Cl/sub 2/: silane =0.35:1) gave 6.5 g of alpha and BETA chloroethyl-trichlorosilane s. Chlorination of methyl-phenyl dichlorosilane resulted in the formation of (C/sub 6/H/sub 2/Cl/sub 3/)(CCl/sub SiCl/sub 2/ (b. p. 185-188/10 mm). (Referativnyy zhurnal. Khimiya, No. 12, 1962)
