EXPERIENCE WITH INTRACAVITARY TREATMENT WITH COLLOIDAL RADIOGOLD

The technique of intraperitoneal injection of Au/sup 198/ is described and a lead-shielded apparatus for carrying out the infusion, and which protects the operator from radiation, is illustrated. Dose distribution is also considered from a theoretical viewpoint and exainined by scintillometry. The relation of the dosy (D) delivered to the peritoneum to the thickness of the fluid layer containing Au/sup 198/ was expressed as: D = 3.75 x 10/sup 4/ x S/V x F, where S is the amount of Au/sup 198/ injected in mC, V the volume of injected solution, and F a factor determined by the thickness of the layer. D reaches a maximum at a thickness of approximates 4 mm, and would be approximates -7100 r after injection of 100 ml containing 100 mC. It was estimated that gamma radiation would account for 10% of the BETA dose. In the treatment of cancer patients to diminish ascites, 100 to 150 mC of Au/sup 198/ injected in 40 to 75 ml resulted in leukopenia, anorexia, and vomiting but an 80 mC dose did not influence blood cells or produce subjective symptoms.
