The effects of adrenal steroid therapy were studied in 43 patients undergoing x-ray, Ra, and Au/sup 198/ treatments for malignant tumors. The postirrathation symptom s included anorexia, nausea, vomiting, other gastrointestinal disorders, and headache. In one group of patients who received up to 6000-r x-ray or 40 to 300 mC Au/siSTA 198/ doses, subsequent treatment with prednisolone at 5 mg/day completely prevented the symptoms. It was also effective when given in doses of 10 to 20 mg/day before irradiation in another group of patients. Prednisolone tended to prevent the rise in circulating eosinophils due to irradiation, and although it tended to aggravate the lymphopenic reaction after irradiation, it did not appear to produce undesirable sideeffects. Combined treatment of a third group of irradiated patients with 10 mg prednisolone + 40 units thyroxine daily appeared to prevent serum electrolyte (K and Na) and blood sugar changes resulting from irradiation. The steroid also had a euphoric effect and reduced the pain of irradiated patients. (H.H.D.)
