TRAIL OF A NEW ANTIEMETIC AGENT, TIGAN IN RADIATION SICKNESS

The use of various kinds of drugs in preventing early symptoms of radiation disease in patients receiving radiotherapy is relviewed, and the results obtained by the use of Tigan (trimethobenzamide) in preventing nausea and vomiting in 100 irradiated patients is described. Preliminary studies in rats showed that it has a hypotensive action only 1/1000 that of chlorpromizine, which also shows antiemetic activity, but less than that of Tigan. Tigan was administered to the irradiated subjects at the first sign of nausea in the form of tablets, taken orally 3 or 4 times a day, or by intramuscular injection. In 80% of the 100 irradiated patients (65% of whom were women) nausea and vomiting were prevented, in 18% the results were fairly satisfactory. and in 2% unsatisfactory. The study included 30 control patients administered a placebo. Side-effects of the drug were few (skin reactions in 2 cases and fever and generalized urticaria in another) and it appeared not to cause any hematologic changes. It was concluded that the drug is useful in preventing nausea resulting from radiotherapy, even though it is not effective in controlling some of the other symptoms of radiation sickness such as anorexia and lassitude.
