RADIATION SICKNESS AND ITS CONTROL WITH THIETHYLPERAZINE (TORECAN): A PRELIMINARY EVALUATION

Journal Article · · Med. J. Australia
OSTI ID:4160126
Thiethylperazine was tested cliniically on the grounds that it is a potent antiemetic without significant tranquillizing properties. The 77 patients tested were treated with comventional radiotherapy, a typical dose for carcinoma of the breast being 4000 to 4500 r. Thiethylperazine maleate was used in a standard dosage of one tablet three times a day, in most cases as soom as the patient developed symptoms but in a few cases for prophylaxis when very large abdominal fields were irradiated. Of 31 patients with carcimoma of the breast, 22 obtained complete relief from nausea and vomiting and an additional six obtained partial relief; treatment was ineffective in only three cases. Patients with abdominial and pelvic neoplasms were less responsive to treatment, only about half experimencing complete relief. Altogether, complete or partial relief was obtained by 92% and the treatment was ineffective in 8% of cases. Thiethylperazine was tolerated well and most patients experienced no side-effects. It is concluded that thiethlperazine is in extremely effective drug in the management of radiation sickness, and is possibly the most effective drug now available. (BBB)
