In May 1982 the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, Great Britain, distributed to 21 laboratories samples of Tl/sup 204/. A critical and detailed examination of the results reported by 19 of these laboratories was made. The possible and probable causes of the wide variation of the absolute value of the activity of the Tl/sup 204/ solution are analyzed. The analysis seemed to show that the variation can be expiained largely by errors introduced in the following corrections: self-absorption, beta absorption in the support, and efficiency of detection of radiations caused by electron capture. Absorption of betas does not seem to pose a problem when the scintillating liquid, scintillating liquid on filter paper, and scintillating gel methods are used. (J.S.R.)
