THE EFFECT OF NUCLEAR STRUCTURE ON THE COEFFICIENT OF THE INTERNAL CONVERSION OF $gamma$-RAYS (in Russian)

The clues to nuclear structure that can be obtained by noting the anomalies in the experimental internal conversion coefficients (ICC) as compared to theoretical values listed in the tables of M. E. Rose or L.A. Sliv are discussed. Deviations from the tabulated values of the internal conversion coefficients can be expected for strongly hindered transitions, but prior to 1960, deviations of up to 20% were observed for pure E2 transitions of the type 2/ sup +/ and up to st r 0/sup +/. It is pointed out that the pure E2 transition (2/sup +/ and up to st r 0/sup +/) with an energy of 412 kev during the decay Au/sup 198/ and up to st r Hg/sup 198/ was corrected to bring it in line with the theoretical value. It is necessary to assume the correct form for the angular distribution of photoelectrons. It is pointed out that BETA - gamma coincidence counting is a reliable method of determining internal conversion coefficients. With forbidden E1 transitions of odd isotopes of the heavy elements, the magnitude of the anomaly in the internal conversion coefficient is proportional to the degree of forbiddenness of the gamma transition. Thus, the magnitude of the deviation of the experimental internal conversion coefficient from the tabulated theoretical value can give information about the nuclear structure. Two independent measurements are necessary to determine the contribution of the nuclear structure to the internal conversion coefficient. (TTT)
