EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES OF E2 CONVERSION COEFFICIENTS
Internal conversion coefficients of E2 transitions from the decays of Co/ sup 60/, Co/sup 58/, Sc/sup 46/, Ir/sup 192/, and Au /sup 198 have been measured with the internal-external conversion method. The experimental K and/or (K + L + M) internal conversion coefficients of the 2+ yields 0+ and 4+ yields 2+ unhindered E2 transitions measured in the Co/sup 60/, Co/sup 58/, and Sc/sup 46/ decays agree well wtth theoretical E2 values. In the Ir/sup 192/ studies, the alpha /sub K/ values for the two 2+ yields 00+ transitions were in agreement with and 4% lower than theoretical E2 values and for the four essentially E2 transitions, two were in agreement with and two were 4 and 810% lower than the theoretical E2 values. However, the deviations are well within experimental errors. The measured alpha /sub L/ values for three transitions in Pt/sup 192/ agreed with the theoretical E2 values and the only alpha /sub M/ measured was 40% lower than the theoretical E2 value. The alpha /sub K/ for the 2+ yields 0+ 412-Kev transition in Hg/sup 198/ was found to be about 6% lower than the theoretical E2 value. The present result averaged with other results indicates for the 412-kev transition alpha /sub K/ = (285 plus or minus 6) x 10/sup -4/ which is about 5% lower than the theoretical E2 value. Thus, in the low Z range experimental E2 conversion coefficients are in good agreement with theory and for Z about 80 there is agreement in some cases, and slight deviations in other cases (of the order of 5%).
