ABSOLUTE AND RELATIVE CONVERSION DETERMINATIONS OF PURE E2 TRANSITIONS OCCURRING IN Hg$sup 198$, Hg$sup 188$, Pt$sup 194$, AND Pt$sup 19$$sup 6$

Conversion coefficients of some pure E2 transitions following the decay of some gold isotopes were determined using an iron-free double focusing spectrometer of the Siegbahn-Edvarson type. The alpha /sub K/ of the 412 kev transition in Hg/sup 198/, the 328 kev transition in Pt/sup 194/ and the 354 ke v transition in Pt/sup 196/ were determined using the exteralinternal method as recently improved by Hultbeng and Stockendal. Results indicate that the theoretical values for these conversion coefficients are 10 to 20% too high. Some additioual measurements made the explanation of the mentioned deviations by systematical errors improbable. Experimental relative conversion coefficients (K/ L, Li/LII/ LIII) of the 412 kev transition in Hg/sup 198/ indicate the deviations found for the absolute K-conversion coefficients to be present also for the L- shells. Results for the ratios L/M of the 412 kev transition in Hg/sup 198/ and M/sub I//M/sub II//M/sub I/ /sub II/ of the 158 kev transition in Hg/sup 199/ suggested a correction factor of 0.6 to be applied to the theoretical values of the conversion coefficients for the M-subshells that are not corrected for screening.
