INTERACTION OF HIGH-CURRENT BEAMS WITH THE PLASMA IN A MAGNETIC FIELD (in Russian)

Journal Article · · At. Energ. (USSR)
OSTI ID:4717591
It was shown that the passage of an originally unmodulated electron beam through a homogeneous plasma excites longitudinal oscillations in it; the E and H waves in the plasma may also interact simultaneously with the beam. Such interactions of a 8.5-amp and 15-kev electron beam placed in a magnetic field which was varied from 360 to 132 oersted were investigated. The energy distribution of the electrons after the passage of the beam through the plasma was determined as a function of the beam current, pressure of the residual gas, and the strength of the longitudinal magnetic field. The strengths of the transversal and longitudinal high-frequency fields generated within the plasma were measured. It was found that they reach about 100 v/cm and 1 to 2 v/cm, respectively. The results indicated that the large energy losses of the beam during its passage through the plasma are due to the excitation of high-frequency oscillations. (TTT)
