INTERACTION OF AN ELECTRON BEAM WITH A PLASMA IN A MAGNETIC FIELD (in Russian)

Results of the experimental investigations on the interaction between a modulated or unmodulated electron beam and plasma in a magnetic field are presented. The conditions of the onset of instabilities in the beam-plasma system are determined with respect to their dependence on beam velocity, plasma density, and magnetic field strength. A high-frequency excitation (in the range 2000-8000 MHz) and low-frequency (in the range 1 kHz to 10 MHz) oscillations in the regions of instability were observed. The spectrum of the excited particles and the period of the instability development were measured. The loss of energy by the beam electrons caused by the excitation of oscillations was measured. The plasma energy increase occurring with the excitation of oscillations was also determined. The development of instabilities is accompanied by a diffusion of the ions and electrons across the magnetic field. The modulation of the beam at a frequency of 3000 MHz leads to the suppression of a whole spectrum of instabilities due to the fact that a wavelengih not coinciding with the resonance wavelength is imposed on the system. Thus only the narrow instability regions caused by parametric excitation remain. The experimental measurements confirm the theoretical assumptions concerning the onset of self-modulation in the beam that passes through the plasma and concerning the presence of a coherent interaction between the electron beam and the plasma.
