Excitation of Oscillations by an Electron Beam in a Plasma; VOZBUZHDENIE KOLEBANII ELEKTRONNYM PUCHKOM V PLAZME

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4062289
Interaction mechanisms for homogeneous nonmodulated electron beam passage through plasma in a magnetic field were studied using 2 to 5 kev electron beams of 50 ma current with magnetic field intensities to 2000 gauss. At the interaction point the density of plasma reaches 10'' e/cm/sup 3/ at 5 x 10/sup -3/ mm Hg. At certain magnetic field values the inltially nonmodulated electron beam becomes unstable with the appearance of intense high- and low-frequency oscillations in both plasma and beam, coherent losses in beam energy, and increased plasma luminescence. The magnitude of magnetic fields with developed instability depends on the residual gas pressure in the interaction region and on the energy of the beam. The instability distribution as functions of magnetic field and oscillation frequencies is given as well as the dispersion characteristics of the plasma-beam system in a magnetic field. (R.V.J.)
