UPTAKE BY THE ROOT AND SUBSEQUENT DISTRIBUTION WITHIN THE POTATO PLANT OF STRONTIUM-89 LEACHED FROM THE FOLIAGE

Strontium-89 distribution in potato plants, (Solanum tuberosum), was followed after foliar application. Results indicate that Sr/sup 89/ that is deposited on potato foliage is accumulated in underground tubers by foliar leaching and root absorption rather than via basipetal transport from the foliage. Pathways for tuber contamination by fallout are discussed. (C.H.)
