THE INFLUENCE OF FOLIAR LEACHING UPON PLANT NUTRITION WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO ROOT-UPTAKE, TRANSLOCATION, AND LOSS OF CALCIUM (thesis)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4146842
The leaching of fallout fission products from the leaves of plants and the redistribution and storage of fission products in plants are discussed. Data are presented from studies on the leaching of Ca/sup 45/ and Sr/sup 89/ from the leaves of potato plants and accumulation in underground tubers of the foliar leachate. Foliar leaching was also found to accelerate the rate of root uptake and translocation of Ca/sup 45/ misted plants. Mechanisms of nutrient recycling within plants and its role in the redistribution of fallout fission products in plants are discussed. (C.H.)
