The entry of strontium into potato tubers after foliar contamination

Journal Article · · Radiation Botany
When the foliage of potato plants was sprayed with radioactive Sr and the plants grown in the open, a small quantity of the Sr passed into the tubers. This could be prevented by protecting the plants from rain and covering the soil. The contamination of tubers from plants exposed to rain was not due to the translocation of Sr within the plant, but was caused by Sr washed from the leaves by rain. Strontium that entered the tubers in this way appeared to do so three times as readily as Sr applied to the soil at the time the potatoes were planted.
